G EN ERA L= SERVICES
Most of the major problems throughout the year have been due to acute
staff shortages caused by staff leaving the Corporation for better paid
jobs outside. The Administration Unit and Drawing Office have been
particularly affected. Whilst staff are being recruited to fill the
Administration unit posts it is proving virtually impossible to attract
draughtsmen of the right calibre and at the end of the year there were
five vacant draughtsmen posts. These difficulties are referred to again
in the latter part of this report.
Chairman's visit to Designs Department
In May when the Chairman of the Board of Governors visited Designs
Department a display of the work of General Services was arranged in the
viewing
room.
The
Chairman showed a lively interest in
the
various
activities displayed.
PRODUCTION UNIT
The Production Unit provides a comprehensive prototype manufacturing and
production engineering advisory service to the Design Sections, not only
is the unit equipped to carry out almost any kind of mechanical and
wiring work required by engineers but it also designs and makes tools
for use by Equipment Department workshops. Liaison with contractors,
suppliers and other BBC departments is an important part of the unit's
work because it ensures that the BBC's standards of manufacture are
compatible with those of outside industry.
Workshops
Over 30 people are employed in these areas which, in addition to machine
shops and wiring areas, include coil winding and printed circuit board
manufacturing facilities.
