Loudspeaker Cone MouZd and Chassis Punch
Toolmaking is an important part of the Model Shop's work and a precision
surface grinder was acquired in 1977 to augment the equipment already
installed for this purpose. Some jigs and fixtures are retained in
Designs Department and are used to reduce time spent on tasks which
recur regularly such as modification to standard chassis parts. More
complex tools like injection moulds are loaned or transferred to
Equipment Department for quantity production.
There was a marked increase in the demand for the solderless connection
technique, wire wrapping, where the connection is made by winding the
wire tightly around a specially designed terminal post. The joints are
more reliable than soldered connections and the terminal posts can be
placed much closer together than would be possible if a conventional hot
soldering
iron
was
used.
